Printmaking, fresco and the medal were his first loves; Arabic calligraphy became his language: Ahmed Afailal was among the first Moroccan painters to bring the written word into abstraction.
The artist
Career
Born in 1949 at Jbel Lahbib, near Tetouan, Ahmed Afailal studied visual arts at the École des Beaux-Arts in Tetouan, the “white dove”, from 1971, graduating three years later. In 1974 he joined the school of applied arts in Seville, then from 1975 the San Fernando school of fine arts in Madrid, from which he graduated in 1979. He has since taught art in Tangier while continuing to paint and engrave, and has exhibited widely in Morocco and Spain.
Words and wounds
Afailal subjects words to a delicate abstract expression to convey the torments of daily life. He forges his own materials, his palette is unique, and his themes touch on the spiritual and the borders of the beyond, in a painting that knows no frontiers and follows untrodden paths.
