Painter

Ahmed Amrani

Luminous geometries, a chromatic range adjusted with finesse, colour used in abundance yet always in balance: Ahmed Amrani is one of the most singular of Morocco’s historic painters, and one of the least known to the wider public.

Career

Born in Tetouan in 1942, Ahmed Amrani studied at the city’s School of Fine Arts from 1954 to 1959, then at the Santa Isabel de Hungría school in Seville and at the Royal Academy of San Fernando in Madrid, where he graduated in 1965; he also holds a diploma from Madrid’s School of Graphic Arts. In 1957, aged fifteen, he took part in the “Great Hispano-Moroccan Exhibition of Painting and Sculpture” in Tetouan, alongside Mariano Bertuchi, Saad Ben Cheffaj, Mohamed Serghini and Mekki Megara. His career then turned towards Spain, where he is represented by several galleries and collected by a loyal following.

A geometry grown airy

His work has evolved slowly but without rupture: the geometry of his compositions has become ever more aerial, open to the world. Line is only an anchor; colour carries the painting. Intuitive and often innovative, Amrani transforms and decomposes his universe without losing an energy rooted in the visible. In 2009 he exhibited in Casablanca for the first time, with “L’Abécédaire bleu” at L’Atelier 21.
