Painter
Azeddine Sanana
Forms that seem to rise from the bottom of the ocean, a shoal of small eyes watching the viewer: Azeddine Sanana, a fisherman, puts his sailor’s dreams on canvas in the colours of sky and sea.
The artist
Career
Born in Essaouira in 1965, Azeddine Sanana has been a fisherman since adolescence, on small wooden boats and on deep-sea trawlers that keep him at sea for weeks; he still practises his trade. Around 2000, after a television programme on painting and a visit to Frédéric Damgaard’s gallery, he took up the brush, self-taught. He belongs to the singular artists of Essaouira.
A marine bestiary
He quickly forged a personal, enigmatic style: no precise figure or animal, but free forms in soft tones, light and even white surfaces that surprise those used to the vivid colours of Essaouira’s painters, with blues, yellows and greens. Selected for the Pro Arte Kasper competition in Morges, he took part in “Les Singuliers d’Essaouira” at the Manoir de la Ville de Martigny, where he was noticed by Gérard Sendrey, who invited him to show some thirty works at the Musée de la Création Franche in Bègles.
