Ghizlane Sahli

Bottoms of plastic bottles taken from waste and covered in silk thread by women embroiderers: Ghizlane Sahli’s “Alvéoles” turn rubbish into organic, poetic three-dimensional embroidery.

Career

Born in Meknes in 1973, Ghizlane Sahli studied architecture in Paris before settling in Marrakech, where she opened a textile workshop with artisans; she won the creation prize of the Trophées Couleurs in 2009. In 2012, after making a dress from waste for a magazine, she closed her workshop to devote herself to art, and co-founded the Zbel Manifesto collective, which works with rubbish, shown at the 2014 Marrakech Biennale and in the inaugural exhibition of the Mohammed VI Museum in Rabat. She is represented by David Bloch Gallery in Marrakech and has worked with Primo Marella Gallery in Milan and Sulger-Buel Gallery in London.

Space, silk and the planet

Her work brings together her three passions: space and volume from her architectural training, silk thread from her years in embroidery, and the environment, from her questions about sustainable development. With women artisans she invents new ways of handling silk, building dreamlike worlds that transform matter and give it meaning.
