Painter
Hamid Douieb
From Magritte’s skies to Belgian hyperrealism, then to a critical figuration addressed to everyone: Hamid Douieb has never yielded to fashion, at the cost of long silences and spectacular returns.
The artist
Career
Born in Casablanca in 1948, Hamid Douieb went to Belgium in 1968 to study engineering, practising sculpture and painting alongside; apart from a few classes at the Academy of Fine Arts, he is self-taught. First drawn to Surrealism and then to hyperrealism, he held his first exhibitions in 1975-1976, and in 1979 joined the Figuration critique group, with which he exhibited in Brussels and Paris. Refusing the dominant trends of abstraction and conceptual art, he went through more than fifteen years of near silence before returning in the 2000s with a more assertive painting. From 2005 he chose to exhibit again in Morocco.
A figuration for everyone
Stubbornly figurative, Douieb wants his painting to remain accessible to the widest public and refuses to wrap it in concepts. He draws more than he paints, his notebooks full of projects. Since the pandemic, his canvases have become darker and more fractured, as if, in a kind of urgency, only the essential were allowed to surface.
