Painter
Houssein Miloudi
Circles, squares, tiny figures and signs older than writing: Houssein Miloudi covered his canvases with a miniature cryptography that is at once innocent and unsettling.
The artist
Career
Born in Essaouira in 1949, Houssein Miloudi began drawing at the age of five and, as a teenager, was already painting works inspired by Moroccan amulets and rural art. He trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Casablanca, in the circle of the Casablanca School, then at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He held his first solo exhibition in Marrakech in 1968 and then chose to live in Essaouira, the city that never stopped nourishing his work. He died on 15 September 2022 and is buried there. At the time, he had spent three years preparing a major exhibition with L’Atelier 21 in Casablanca, which represented him.
The childhood of signs
His art draws on Amazigh and African traditions, the amulets of the countryside and the silversmiths of Essaouira. Strict geometry contains a swarm of signs and miniature figures, in a delicate palette and with a light touch. Varying supports, sheets, walls, canvases and objects, he invented many graphic solutions; Toni Maraini called him a master of “miniaturised cryptography”. He also designed the first sculpture at the entrance to Essaouira, a concrete panel carved with a Kufic inscription.
