The artist
Career
Born in Asilah in 1964, Mohamed Anzaoui lives and works between his home town and Tangier. He discovered painting in the children’s workshops of the Asilah cultural Moussem, to which his vocation owes a great deal. He began exhibiting in the early 1990s, first in Asilah, then across Morocco and in Europe, notably in Spain and the Netherlands. In 2000 he co-founded L’Atelier in Asilah with Mouad Jbari and Souhaïl Benazzouz, a place for exhibitions, experiments and exchange; in 2001 a residency at the Cité internationale des arts in Paris marked a turning point.
A painting of dreams
Without academic training, Anzaoui paints from memory and desire: the body, the earth and the sea guide the composition and open its space. Acrylics and pigments of every kind meet, overlap, diffuse and intertwine, while the textures of the surface carry the elements of the painting like calligraphic signs freed from meaning.
