Painter
Mohamed Drissi
Emaciated faces, bodies stripped almost to the bone: Mohamed Drissi painted the human being at the moment it no longer pretends, between grace, anguish and desire.
The artist
Career
Born in Tetouan on 4 May 1946, Mohamed Drissi trained at the National School of Fine Arts in his home city from 1963, then pursued an unusually international education: the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris (1968), the Sant Jordi school in Barcelona (1970), the Royal Academy of San Fernando in Madrid (1974), a placement at the School of Art and Architecture in Brussels, and art therapy at the School of Visual Arts in New York (1980). He then settled his studio in Tangier and devoted himself to painting, sculpture and printmaking. He died in 2003.
A theatre of the body
Close to German Expressionism, his work stages naked, androgynous, often distorted figures, and dares subjects long kept out of Moroccan painting: the nude, the bar, the margins. Behind them run exile, alienation and the repression of the “Years of Lead”, raised to a universal meditation on suffering and the human condition.
