Painter

Mohamed Lekleti

After Marey and Muybridge, Mohamed Lekleti breaks movement down into successive drawn images, until an “uncanny strangeness” rises from the gaps between them.

Career

Born in Taza, Mohamed Lekleti has lived and worked in Montpellier since 1986. He studied cinema and then visual arts at the university in Aix-en-Provence, where he earned a master’s degree. In 2011 he won the prize of the Salon du dessin in Paris; in 2013 he was among the artists representing France at the Palazzo delle Belle Arti in Turin; in 2014 he took over the fortress of Salses, a French national monument.

The pregnant moment

Through drawing and mixed media, Lekleti diverts the principle of chronophotography to analyse the movement of beings and things. He dislocates the world and recomposes it in new associations, favouring the pregnant instant to probe what the eye cannot see. The succession of images and the multiplication of fragments of a reconstructible reality produce something indeterminate, a diffuse unease, an imperceptible world, invented and dreamed, that the writer Khalil M’Rabet called his “visual anagrams”.
