Painter
Mohammed Kacimi
Born in 1942 in Meknes, Mohammed Kacimi was a self-taught painter who began painting in the late 1950s. A poet and writer as much as a painter, he made the studio a place to reflect on humanity, memory and freedom.
The artist
His painting never stopped evolving: bodies and silhouettes, signs, then large compositions inhabited by Africa, the earth and travel, up to installations. Thick matter, earthy colours and broad gestures give his canvases a very physical presence.
Committed to Moroccan cultural life, he died in Rabat in 2003. He is considered one of the major artists of his generation.
