Painter

Mohammed Qannibou

Bodies broken apart, faces with blurred features, figures that turn into letters and strokes: Mohammed Qannibou makes the human body the alphabet of a pictorial calligraphy.

Career

Born in Taza, Mohammed Qannibou is a visual arts teacher who has developed his own technique and built a career in Morocco and abroad. Since 1992 he has exhibited across Morocco, in the Arab world and in Europe, notably in France and Turkey. In 1992 he took part in Mohammad Omar Khalil’s printmaking workshop at the Asilah festival, where he has also painted murals.

A thought of the body

His research centres on the body, which he constantly dislocates and translates into signs, letters and lines. Anonymous faces express, according to the critic Naïma Mennor, a profound relationship to otherness: painting the body this way is a way of thinking about humanity and the world. Lines and geometric forms structure compositions in which portrait and writing merge.
