Painter
Najia Mehadji
A single stroke, drawn in one breath, folds and unfolds into a flower, a dervish or a galaxy: Najia Mehadji’s painting holds the line at the exact point where it becomes movement.
The artist
Career
Born in Paris in 1950, Najia Mehadji graduated from Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, where she wrote her master’s thesis on Paul Cézanne in 1973, and from the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. She lives and works between Paris and Essaouira.
The trace and the breath
From the 1980s onwards she brought contemporary painting into dialogue with forms from Islamic art, the dome, the polygon, the floral motif, the arabesque, without ever lapsing into ornament. Her large works, often executed in a single gesture with an oil stick, speak of rhythm, of the body in motion and of the mystical dance of the Sufis. The series “Ligne de vie”, painted entirely in her Essaouira studio during lockdown, extends this meditation on fragility and the vital impulse.
