The artist
Career
Born in Marrakech in 1975, Noureddine Chater was drawn to art very young: at thirteen he won the Young Painting prize of the city of Lidice, in Czechoslovakia. His love of calligraphy came from a calligrapher he met at a youth centre as a teenager. After studying visual arts, he taught for thirteen years in different regions of Morocco before devoting himself fully to painting in his Marrakech studio.
The momentum of the sign
Chater uses the Arabic alphabet to pass on a heritage through abstract compositions that leave each viewer free to read them in their own way. The elegance of the calligraphic line, learned in adolescence, meets the freedom of colour; the variety of supports, from wrapping paper to patterned sheets, gives each work its own texture.
