Noureddine Daifallah
Seeking to set himself apart from his predecessors and bring his own touch, Noureddine Daifallah first exhibited in Marrakech in 1977, aged just seventeen. His work has since crossed the Mediterranean, shown in Paris, London, Italy, Portugal, Toulouse and the United Arab Emirates, where Arabic script speaks for a whole culture and civilisation.
The artist
"Arabic writing is at once a noble art, a centuries-old tradition and a heritage to preserve," he says. With his brush he replaces ink with paint, on canvas and on paper, in mostly dark, earthy tones. Rooted in the spiritual and metaphysical dimension of Arabic calligraphy, his practice nonetheless has its own technical and creative character.
Using very sober means, he maintains an almost physical relationship with the letter. Like the minimalists, he pushes his structures to the limits of tension, weaving texts on which coloured motifs catch. It is the work of an ascetic, a seasoned scribe, in whom the pleasure of creating far outweighs duty, revisiting ancestral memory to carry it forward.
