The artist
Career
Born in 1912 in Douar Oulad Youssef, in the El Kelaa des Sraghna region near Marrakech, Radia Bent Lhoucine took up painting in 1961, past the age of fifty, after watching her son, the painter Miloud Labied, at work. Entirely self-taught, she held her first exhibition in 1962 in Jacqueline Brodskis’s studio in Rabat. Recognition came quickly: in 1963 she was included in “Two Thousand Years of Art in Morocco” at the Galerie Charpentier in Paris, then given a solo show in Lausanne under the aegis of Jean Dubuffet. She stopped painting at the end of the 1970s and died in Salé in 1994.
Raw fauna and folk figures
Long filed under naive art, her work is closer to art brut by its freedom and its indifference to academic rules. Flat colour, bold outlines and saturated space give her compositions the presence of an image from a dream. With Chaïbia Talal and Fatima Hassan El Farouj, she is counted among the three pioneers who marked the history of Moroccan modern art.
