Saâd Hassani

Painter

Saâd Hassani

For more than half a century Saâd Hassani gathered “debris from the landscape”: a patient studio practice, endlessly begun again, between the erasure and the reappearance of forms.

Career

Born in Rabat in 1948, Saâd Hassani was self-taught. He held his first solo exhibition at eighteen, nourished by the School of Paris, art brut and abstract expressionism, by Matisse and Klee, and by Jilali Gharbaoui and Ahmed Cherkaoui. His studio on rue d’Alger in Rabat welcomed painters, poets and intellectuals, before he settled in Casablanca, facing the sea, in 1972.

Close to the artists of the Casablanca School, he also lived for several years in Europe. A gallerist from 1992 to 1994, he created a 220 m² monumental painting for the 1998 Lisbon World Expo. He was a tireless advocate for a structured art market and for artists’ status. He died at home in Casablanca on 9 June 2026, aged 77.

Erase, begin again

The gestural abstraction of his early years gave way, from 1990, to a renewed figuration and to experiments with natural pigments. In 1997, at the Cité internationale des arts in Paris, he began the “Chessboard” series, in which form emerges from successive erasures and overlays. Then came “Corps pluriel” and “Corps singuliers”, and finally the “Chants de nuit”, large monochromes in natural pigments.
