The artist
Career
Born in Tetouan, Saïd Messari studied decorative arts, advertising, printmaking and art history at the National Institute of Fine Arts in his home city, then continued at the Complutense University of Madrid. He has lived in Madrid for some thirty years, where he fought to establish his own studio and produces limited-edition prints on commission for companies, banks and collectors. He has exhibited since 1982 in Morocco, Spain, Italy and Brazil, and has taught in Italy.
Lab 24
Messari is known for non-toxic, environmentally friendly printmaking techniques, a way of bringing global ecological concerns into the work itself. In his experimental “Lab 24” he combines etching, papier-mâché sculpture, acrylic, drawing and collage, on rectangular, circular or triangular supports that form puzzles and widen the reading of the work. His metaphorical silhouettes speak of opposite and enigmatic destinations, as fragile as the paper of memory. His ambition: to restore printmaking to equal standing with painting and to reveal the nobility of paper.
