The artist
Career
A native of Tangier, Sanae Regragui grew up in a family of artists. Her father is the painter Mohamed Fquih Regragui, whose canvases she loved to contemplate as a child; her mother, Faouzia Souaf Regragui, a former French teacher, is a self-taught naive painter who works in dots; her brother Choukri Regragui and her sister also chose the visual arts. With a diploma in visual arts, she teaches alongside her career as a painter.
Painting and zajal
From childhood she showed a rich imagination, which found a second outlet in poetry in zajal, Moroccan dialect verse, an approach her father encouraged. Her first collection, Al Majdoub Al Karn 21 (“The Majdoub of the 21st century”), takes as its central figure the sixteenth-century Moroccan poet Sidi Abderrahmane El Majdoub, and addresses the social difficulties faced by young Moroccans, from clandestine emigration to drugs.
For her, contemporary art and poetry complete each other: she sometimes seeks inspiration for her paintings in her poems, and each canvas in turn prompts new verse. She has also presented a series of works inspired by the legend of Aïcha Kandicha.
