Painter
Soufiane Idrissi
Colours born of code, surfaces cut like interfaces: Soufiane Idrissi is one of the pioneers of post-Internet painting in Morocco, an art in which the digital never replaces the gesture.
The artist
Career
Born in 1986, Soufiane Idrissi lives and works in Rabat. He came to painting from graphic art and computing, and in 2007 co-founded the collective Radar with the painter Mohammed Chrouro. After testing pastel, oil, acrylic on paper and oil on wood, he settled on cellulose paint on wood panel, the material of his signature works.
In 2017 his first solo exhibition, at the Galerie Venise Cadre in Casablanca, included a work produced with artificial intelligence: an algorithm driving a scraping machine that answered the artist’s proposals. In 2022 a 2007 work was offered in Sotheby’s Contemporary Discoveries sale. In March 2026 the Bab Rouah gallery in Rabat devoted a retrospective to him, covering twenty years of work from 2006 to 2025.
From matter to code
For Idrissi, the tools and languages of the Internet have changed the very act of painting. His colours come from computer languages such as HTML and CSS; with engineers, he developed an algorithm that translates colours and forms into code before transposing the resulting arrangements onto the support. His paintings are systems of organised, juxtaposed surfaces in single colours, a lineage the gallery traces from Paul Gauguin to Donald Judd and Brice Marden.
The retrospective set out three moments: the cellulose experiments of 2006 to 2009, between control and alteration; the canvas as a structured field of tension from 2010 to 2021; and, in recent years, scraped and scratched surfaces of an almost sculptural presence.
