The artist
Career
Born in Fez in 1947, Abdelhaï Diouri has drawn and painted since childhood, first shaped by the forms and colours of zellige, his father’s craft. Self-taught, he trained in printmaking at the Atelier d’art et de gravure in Paris in 1974-1975 and at the Raissouni Palace in Asilah in 1990. In parallel he pursued a brilliant academic career in philosophy, sociology and anthropology: a thesis supervised by Roland Barthes, research grants in the United States, publications and teaching at Harvard. He then chose to devote himself to painting. He held his first solo exhibition in Tangier in 1974, and lives and works in Harhoura.
The exploded experience
“With the blue period, painting became a mystical investment; today it is the exploratory space of exploded experience,” he says. Inks, oils, prints, earths, and more recently sculpture and electronic materials in installations: each body of work takes years. A vertical triptych sums up his approach: read from top to bottom, a door and two steps decompose into a cascade of colour; read from bottom to top, the form is born.
