The artist
Career
Born in Casablanca in 1950, Abdelkader Laaraj is a self-taught painter and sculptor. Adopted by Asilah, he has frequented since the 1960s and 1970s the writers and artists drawn to the city and its international cultural festival, where his good humour is as well known as his painting.
The dream of flight
The desire for flight, elevation and altitude structures his imagination: some see in it the logic of dreams or a longing for open space, others the fireworks of a feast with its airborne round dances. The painter Azdine Hachimi Idrissi notes that the hand and brush seem caught up in the very aerobatics they give to these “flying entities”. Behind the apparent lightness of a child’s wonder, the work holds a real depth, and a constant capacity to astonish.
