Abdelkrim Ghattas

Abdelkrim Ghattas

A horizon, a sun, colour pushed to its highest pitch: Abdelkrim Ghattas has built, over half a century, a hard-edge painting in which the geometry of the Casablanca School meets the light of the Atlantic.

Career

Born in Casablanca on 8 April 1945, Abdelkrim Ghattas entered the city’s École des Beaux-Arts in 1964, in the years when Farid Belkahia, Mohamed Melehi, Mohamed Chabâa, Toni Maraini, Bert Flint and Jacques Azéma were turning it into a laboratory of modern Moroccan art. In 1968 he left for Paris and spent four years at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts. Back in Casablanca in 1972, he took up the torch in turn and has taught at the École supérieure des Beaux-Arts ever since.

Hard-edge and heritage

His work joins geometric abstraction and an ultra-dynamic chromatism to a deep attachment to Moroccan heritage. A member of the Moroccan Association of Plastic Arts from 1974, he took painting into public space: backdrops for national holidays and murals in Asilah, Agadir, Casablanca and Salé. In 1983 he painted a mural at the Berrechid psychiatric hospital with the patients, an experience that marked him deeply. His recent solo shows revisit his works of the 1970s through the lens of today.
