Abdelmajid Hannaoui
Geometric forms with a Matisse-like touch, motifs that act as reminiscences: Abdelmajid Hannaoui practised a forward-looking semi-figuration, and defended Moroccan art as much with his pen as with his brush.
The artist
Career
Born in Zagora in 1951, Abdelmajid Hannaoui held his first exhibition in Rabat in 1982. A founding member of the Moroccan Union of Visual Artists (UMAP) in 1991, he co-founded and directed the quarterly review Matrice des Arts and, as a critic, wrote many articles on established artists and young talents in the Moroccan and international press. He died in Rabat in 2006.
Heritage and the body
From the early 1980s he worked on national heritage and on the body, constantly exploring new genres and styles, in a largely dreamlike vision. His double activity as painter and critic made him one of the enlivening voices of the debate on fine art in Morocco.
