Painter
Abdelmajid Sabri
Women doing the washing, children at play, fishermen returning with their catch: Abdelmajid Sabri paints Moroccan daily life in meticulous watercolours inspired by Persian miniatures.
The artist
Career
Born in 1985 near Ben Guerir, between Marrakech and Casablanca, Abdelmajid Sabri is the younger brother of the painter Maati Sabri. A young shepherd who could not pursue his studies, he turned to painting after discovering the work of Mohamed Ben Ali R’bati, a revelation. Self-taught, he has taken part in group and solo exhibitions, notably at the Galerie nationale Bab Rouah in Rabat and at the Pullman hotel in Marrakech; his first exhibition was an immediate success with collectors.
A miniature of everyday life
His watercolours on paper revisit emblematic scenes of Moroccan culture with great precision and a dreamlike quality that is anything but naive. Bright colours are present, more subtly than in his brother’s work; Sabri renders reality as he perceives it, without distorting it.
