The artist
Career
Born in Casablanca in 1959, Abderrahim Yamou left for France in 1978 to study biology and then sociology in Toulouse and at the Sorbonne, while taking courses in art history and drawing. He settled in Paris in 1986 to devote himself to painting and held his first solo exhibition in 1990. He lives and works between Paris and Tahannaout, near Marrakech.
A botanist’s painting
From 1995 he painted with earth and sand, bringing forth ibexes, rams and gazelles inspired by the rock art of the Atlas. In 1998 plants took over: leaves, flowers, branches, gardens and forests in muted, transparent tones, partly veiled by signs and calligraphy, often shown as diptychs. In the 2000s his “germinations” reached the very first forms of nature, cellular networks that proliferate and intertwine like cosmogonies. Alongside painting, he makes sculptures studded with hundreds of nails, recalling the nkisi figures of the Congo, from which small human silhouettes or living plants emerge.
