The artist
Career
Born in Ksar El Kebir in 1965, Abdeslam Karmadi held his first exhibition in Rabat in 1992 and won the third young painting competition of the Wafabank Foundation in 1993. In 1995 he took part in “Inside-Outside”, organised by the British Council in Casablanca, and in 1997 was in residence at the Cité internationale des arts in Paris. He teaches visual arts, runs a painting workshop and lives and works in Rabat.
From shadow to arabesque
His intuitive, allusive painting was dark at first, marked by a period of doubt and anguish in which a concentration-camp world invaded his drawings. It has since blossomed into volutes and shimmering colour, elegant and sensual, rooted in the Arab tradition and made thoroughly contemporary by the detachment with which Karmadi shows beings and things.
