The artist
Career
Born in Fez in 1976, Ahmed Bennani is a painter who also embraces performance. His work calls for the liberation of women from the codes imposed by a conservative society, and seeks, according to the critic Ben Mimoune, a better dialogue between generations of artists and a clearer place for performance as an artistic practice.
A Dantesque journey
His exhibitions unfold as a journey in three stages: a refusal of the world, a rebirth, then a new relationship between being and world. Works that embrace the past to tell the present and envisage a future in which the body enjoys its freedom after many trials. Modern at heart, Bennani refuses the comfort of “painting for painting’s sake”: his work is both painting and a critique of painting. As Ben Mimoune writes, quoting Nietzsche, “we have art so that we do not perish of the truth”.
