Ahmed Cherkaoui
Born in 1934 in Boujad, Ahmed Cherkaoui learned calligraphy at a very young age. He went to train in Paris in the late 1950s, first in the decorative arts and then at the École des Beaux-Arts, before continuing his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw.
The artist
His contribution was decisive: he was among the first to bring modern abstraction into dialogue with the signs of Moroccan culture, Amazigh tattoo, henna, jewellery and carpet motifs. Often painted on jute, his signs become vibrant forms, at once ancient and resolutely contemporary.
He died suddenly in 1967, aged 33. In barely ten years of work he opened a path that a whole generation of Moroccan artists would follow.
