Painter
Ahmed El Houari
Curves, geometric constructions both balanced and wild, cyclopean eyes looking out through signs: Ahmed El Houari paints an exuberant cubism, where colour is spread by hand and everything moves.
The artist
Career
Born in 1974 in a mountain village of the Agadir region, Ahmed El Houari spent a solitary childhood making his own toys from salvaged materials. At six he left for Casablanca to attend primary school with his uncle; speaking only Tamazight, he found in drawing, with ballpoint pens borrowed from his brother, a way into his new world. Against his family’s wishes he took the visual arts option at the Jaber Ibn Hayyan lycée, then earned diplomas in computer graphics, decoration and architectural drafting. His first canvas, “Femme du Sud du Maroc”, dates from 1992. He has worked as a fresco painter, portraitist and designer of carpet and embroidery motifs.
From charcoal to cubism
From his charcoal drawings combined with paint was born a style close to Cubism, which gradually moved towards a fully abstract and cubist path. His painting is one of exuberance, rhythm and spontaneity: a direct contact with matter and canvas that leaves the viewer free to read it with passion. He masters every genre, abstraction, figuration, portrait and still life.
