The artist
Career
Born in Fez in 1967, Asmae Alami moved to Canada, where she attended stained-glass and visual arts workshops in Montreal, before returning to Morocco in 2005 and settling in Marrakech to devote herself to art. Self-taught and multidisciplinary, she works in sculpture, installation, painting and drawing, and is a member of the Al Muniya association and of the International Association of Art. Several of her installations have been commissioned for public projects, and her work is held in international collections.
Between silence and word
Placing the human being at the centre, she uses the alphabet, the most powerful tool of communication, to build installations that occupy space with strength and fluidity. In painting, the letter replaces the line to embody figures: her work stands at the intersection of a Western culture of the icon and an Arab-Muslim culture of calligraphy, giving birth to characters from an inner world searching between silence and speech.
