The intaglio press that once printed for Braque, Fautrier, Villon and Arp now turns in Morocco: Asmae Lahkim Bennani brought it home to give printmaking a workshop of its own.
The artist
Career
Born in 1971, Asmae Lahkim Bennani began by drawing faces from the magazine “Majid”, followed the visual arts section at lycée, trained as a teacher and taught before settling in Paris. She passed the entrance examination of the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts and specialised for five years in engraving, lithography and screen printing, publishing two lithography portfolios, “Mur” and “Passage à l’acte”.
A historic press
Determined to open a printmaking workshop in Morocco, she installed what is described as the first lithography press in the country, together with the intaglio press of Jean Signovert, the printer of the Galerie Maeght, coveted by several museums. Signovert’s widow, who wanted to see it keep working rather than be embalmed in a museum, let it go to her for almost nothing.
