Aziz Abou Ali
Copper plates, acid, inks, paper and cloth held no secret for him: Aziz Abou Ali was one of the great printmakers of his generation, fully part of the Spanish art scene, where he printed works by Tàpies and Miró.
The artist
Career
Born in Marrakech in 1935, Aziz Abou Ali studied at the School of Fine Arts in Tetouan, then left for Spain in 1964 to attend the Santa Isabel de Hungría school of fine arts in Seville. In 1967 he moved to Madrid to perfect his skills in mural painting and printmaking at the San Fernando school. He settled into Madrid’s artistic milieu and belonged to the celebrated Grupo 15, the printmaking workshop where he printed works for artists as monumental as Antoni Tàpies and Joan Miró.
The alchemy of printmaking
His prints show a complete mastery of the medium, of the chemistry of acid and copper and of colour. His career was marked by distinctions in Spain and Italy, a sign of the place he earned within Spanish art while remaining one of the pioneers of Moroccan printmaking.
