The artist
Career
Poet and self-taught painter, Aziz Azrhai received some art training at school in the 1980s, then forged his own path, nourished by the experience of other artists. He has published several poetry collections, illustrating their covers himself, and exhibited his series “Rides” (Wrinkles) at the CDG art space.
Two autonomous arts
For Azrhai, poetry and painting complement each other without one illustrating the other: when he cannot translate an idea into words, he paints it, and vice versa. He refuses to be confined to one technique or label; the blank canvas is an anxiety to master, the first stroke a beginning destined to be reworked. Painting, for him, is an adventure that leads elsewhere, and each elsewhere a discovery.
