Bachir Demnati
A geometric line that dominates every composition, a mastery of colour and light: Bachir Demnati was among the very first Moroccan painters of geometric abstraction, before a long silence and a return in force.
The artist
Career
Born in Tangier, Bachir Demnati painted his first geometric abstraction, “Les Pyramides”, in 1961, at the age of fifteen; he recalls being one of only four artists working in this vein at the time, with Mohamed Ataallah, Mohamed Chabâa and Mohamed Melehi. He graduated in architecture from La Cambre in Brussels and worked as an architect and interior designer. In the 1970s he exhibited alongside Melehi, Chabâa, Belkahia, Kacimi and Karim Bennani, in Tangier, Tetouan, Asilah, Rabat, Casablanca and Marrakech, and abroad in Zurich, Tunis, Algiers, Baghdad, Brussels and Barcelona. In 1978 he attended the founding meeting of the Asilah festival and took part in creating the first Moroccan association of plastic arts.
The return
Work and family then kept him away from exhibitions for some thirty years. His silence was not sterile: he used it to enlarge sketches made over two decades, unknown to the public. Drawing, acrylic on canvas, collage on wood and plexiglass: Demnati has returned to geometric abstraction with the intention of devoting the rest of his life to it.
