The artist
Career
Born in Casablanca in 1957, El Mostafa Maftah graduated from the Écoles des Beaux-Arts of Casablanca and Marseille. He lived in Italy for more than seven years, where he was strongly influenced by Alberto Burri, Antoni Tàpies, Lucio Fontana and art informel. Back in Morocco, he taught at the École des Beaux-Arts in Casablanca from 2001 to 2003. Painter and sculptor, he also creates installations and performances.
The memory of walls
The wall has haunted his work from the start: as a student he installed a large canvas on the quay of Marseille’s Old Port, against a wall, inviting passers-by to leave a trace. Walls bear witness to generations, their anger, their loves and that circular gesture everyone recognises. On this ground, Maftah figures the games of boys and girls from the Bernoussi and Hay Mohammadi neighbourhoods where he grew up, from childhood perception to his own visual inventions.
