Career

Born in Imilchil in 1958, Faouzi Laatiris graduated from the National Institute of Fine Arts in Tetouan in 1983, then from the École des Beaux-Arts in Bourges in 1989. A professor at INBA Tetouan, he founded its “Volume and installation” workshop in the early 1990s, from which came Safaa Erruas, Batoul S’Himi, Younès Rahmoun, Mohssin Harraki and Mustapha Akrim, among others. He lives and works between Tetouan and Martil.

An aesthetic of hybridisation

Since the 1990s he has developed a work that echoes the urban and economic building sites of the global South: visual “bombs” suspended between an almost industrial system of production, a kind of high-tech make-do, and the melancholy of ruins. In 2016 the Mohammed VI Museum devoted “Volumes fugitifs” to him and to the Tetouan school, an exhibition that measured his decisive influence on contemporary art in Morocco.
