The artist
Career
A self-taught Franco-Moroccan artist, Farah Chaoui attended classes at the Académie Charpentier in Paris and a photography school in Toulouse. Passionate about Marrakech, a city she finds uniquely charming, she has held several exhibitions in Morocco and abroad.
An instinctive painting
Her approach is “instinctual and fluctuating”: some canvases recall art brut or singular art, others are clearly expressionist, Orphic or abstract. Before a blank canvas she never knows what she will paint; she withdraws from the world and lets an energy flow out spontaneously, so that painting becomes a struggle, or rather a dance, whose outcome nothing can predict. Photography extends her keen visual sensibility.
