Painter

Hammouda Zaoui

Whirls of colour in a circular, dynamic rhythm, where even a figurative hint gives way to colour as the true subject: Hammouda Zaoui paints abstraction as an act of self-discovery.

Career

Born in El Jadida in 1957, Hammouda Zaoui studied applied arts at the Jaber Ibnou Hayane technical lycée in Casablanca, graduating in advertising in 1981, then earned a diploma in interior architecture in Liège, Belgium, in 1984. Back in Morocco he became a teacher of visual arts in El Jadida, while exhibiting regularly: the Maârif cultural centre in Casablanca, the Argane festival in Essaouira, the touring “New Wave” across twenty-five Moroccan cities, performances in the Portuguese City of El Jadida and, abroad, in Nice, Málaga and Rome.

The primacy of the spiritual gaze

For Zaoui, abstraction is first a reflection on painting itself: a borderless art in which everyone, whatever their culture, finds emotions of their own. He concentrates on the act of painting rather than the result, dismantling objects into autonomous signs so that colours become real as colours. His challenge is to teach the viewer to draw beauty even from the ugly, and to read in an abstraction a lived reality.
