Painter
Hassan Dahane
Flame-like traces, broad fields of flat colour, fragments that never quite touch: Hassan Dahane has forged a personal cubism that now opens onto lyrical abstraction.
The artist
Career
Born in Settat in 1975, Hassan Dahane wanted to be a geologist, but having to work to fund his studies led him from science to art. He worked as a framer and interior decorator before developing, over more than a decade, a cubist style of his own. He has since chosen abstraction, where he feels fully at home.
Gesture as song
His canvases play black and white against bright colours, raised with white or darkened with black, in a fast, almost automatic gesture close to surrealism. Form gives way to content, conscious and unconscious at once: the surface becomes a burst, a memory, a chromatic whirl. Rhythmic balance of colour is essential to him, the brush acting as an extension of the body. The critic Vanessa Shild sees in him a virtuoso who has tried figuration, abstraction and every technique of preparing the canvas, all in the service of his painting.
