The artist
Career
Born in Casablanca, Hassan Darsi spent seven years at the École supérieure des arts plastiques et visuels in Mons, Belgium, before returning to Morocco in 1989. Since then his work has been bound up with the social, cultural, political and economic context of his country and its place in the world. In 1995 he co-founded La Source du Lion in Casablanca, a cultural laboratory devoted to the role of art in society. In 2022 he received a Prince Claus Impact Award.
The project as a tool
Urban interventions, installations, films and sculptures draw on the places and situations he lives through. Convinced that art has a role to play in the cultural and human development of a city, Darsi works through the notion of the project, the trigger of civic and political awareness. With “Le Projet de l’Hermitage” (2002-2008) he worked with local residents on the revival of an abandoned colonial-era park in Casablanca; his gilded scale models question real estate speculation and urban change. Today he is turning to forgotten rural spaces between Casablanca and Rabat, to weave social links and propose ecological and economic alternatives.
