Painter
Hassan El Glaoui
Born in Marrakech in the 1920s, Hassan El Glaoui was the son of Thami El Glaoui, Pasha of Marrakech. Destined by his family for another career, he first painted in secret, before being encouraged to continue and leaving to study painting in Paris in the early 1950s.
The artist
His favourite subject was the horse: riders, fantasias, tbourida, horses galloping or at rest, painted with a lively, luminous touch. He also painted portraits and scenes of Moroccan life, always with elegance and a sense of movement.
After many years in France he settled back in Morocco. He died in 2018 and remains the great Moroccan painter of the horse.
