The artist
Career
Born in Fez in 1946 into an old family of Fassi craftsmen, Hassan Slaoui trained as a ceramist and cabinetmaker, then studied art in Paris. Rather than settle on the classical canvas, he chose to rehabilitate the skills of vernacular craft and to make them the ground of a contemporary practice. He lives and works in Rabat. In 2002 he curated the visual arts programme of the Mawazine festival, including exhibitions of Ousmane Sow and the Musée Dapper.
The archaeology of wood
Slaoui approaches wood not as a technician but as an artist: a living material whose grain holds the torments of being, the wear of matter, the fragility shared by mineral, plant, animal and human. He sculpts and paints, engraves and assembles, frames and patinates, fragments and restores, until the object is reborn, aged and worn, as a paradoxically contemporary relic.
