Jilali Gharbaoui
Born in 1930 near Fez, Jilali Gharbaoui lost his parents very young and grew up in great hardship. Painting soon became his refuge. In the early 1950s a scholarship took him to Paris, where he trained at the École des Beaux-Arts and the Académie Julian, followed by a stay in Rome.
The artist
He was one of the very first Moroccan painters to commit to gestural abstraction. His canvases are made of nervous strokes, swirls and masses of colour thrown down with almost physical energy: a painting of momentum and urgency that shows the gesture rather than a subject.
His life, marked by great fragility, ended in Paris in 1971. His brief, intense body of work makes him one of the founders of modern Moroccan painting.
