Painter
Miloud Labied
A gardener turned painter, Miloud Labied spent his life fleeing the curve only to return to it: an obstinate body of work that never stopped putting its own sign back into play.
The artist
Career
Born in 1939 in El Kelaâ des Sraghna, Miloud Labied settled in Salé with his mother, the painter Radia Bent Lhoussine. In the late 1950s he was working as a gardener and a barber in Rabat when he joined Jacqueline Brodskis’s free workshops. Self-taught, he always refused to be called a naïve painter. It was he who introduced Ahmed Louardiri, another gardener, to art lovers in the capital.
Four ways of one sign
His first canvases told of popular life with a touch of the fantastic. In the 1960s he turned to abstraction, testing curves and Amazigh signs. Around 1970 the curve became a body, female and maternal, with allusive sensuality. He then tried to escape it through the square and the rectangle, before coming back to it. In the 1990s he stopped painting for several years to build his foundation at Assif El Mal, in Chichaoua province, which opened in 2004. He died in Rabat on 9 October 2008.
