Career

Born in Marrakech in 1946, Mohamed Abouelouakar exhibited at the Galerie Bab Rouah in Rabat from the 1960s, then left in 1966 to study cinema at the State Institute of Cinematography in Moscow, where he graduated as a director. His film “Hadda” (1984), of a rare poetic breadth, won the Grand Prix of Morocco’s National Film Festival. Painting nonetheless forms the core of his work. He lives and works between Casablanca and Elektrostal, in Russia.

The great river of being

Few artists have invented so powerful a visual vocabulary for the world of ideas and emotions. Figures, pigments, lines and photographs are stirred together in a work that laughs at being alive and mourns its dead, its ills and misfortunes. A filmmaker’s eye for montage and an openness to every technique of his time give his paintings their density.
