Painter
Mohamed Azouzi
Ochre, brown and blue, and at the heart of the canvas a single Arabic letter: between Casablanca and Paris, Mohamed Azouzi built a calligraphic abstraction placed under the sign of the Noun.
The artist
Career
Born in Casablanca in 1946, to a family from the Tafilalet, Mohamed Azouzi entered the city’s École des Beaux-Arts at twenty, when Farid Belkahia, Mohamed Melehi, Mohamed Chebâa and Mohamed Hamidi, the masters of the Casablanca School, were teaching there. He held his first exhibition in Casablanca in 1970.
In 1971 he left for Paris, where he continued his training at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts and the École nationale supérieure des Arts décoratifs, in the studio of the painter Jean Bertholle, who became a friend. He settled in Paris and exhibited there, then in Tokyo, New York and Moscow. In 2022 he showed in Rabat for the first time, at the Tatmin gallery, alongside his friend Abderrahim Makhlouf. He died in August 2022.
The breath of the Noun
Non-figurative and calligraphic, his painting draws on the signs and spiritual tradition of Morocco. Its palette, dominated by ochres, browns and blues, evokes the earth, the desert and Africa, sometimes softened by pastel tones. The letter noun returns as a leitmotif: a figure of breath and balance, a bridge between earth and sky, between oneself and others, through which the painter spoke of knowledge and of the bond between peoples.
Retrospective
From 28 October 2025 to 8 February 2026, the Musée des Confluences Dar El Bacha in Marrakech devoted a retrospective to him, “Sous le signe du Noun”, organised by the Fondation nationale des musées and curated by his son, Amir Raphaël Azouzi.
