Painter
Mohamed Hamidi
From fresco to sign, Mohamed Hamidi made abstraction a matter of the body: full forms, frank colours, motifs of carpet and jewellery raised to the scale of a wall.
The artist
Career
Born in Casablanca on 7 August 1941, Mohamed Hamidi trained at the city’s École des Beaux-Arts before moving to Paris, where he studied at the École des métiers d’art and then at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts, graduating in monumental painting in 1964. There he worked as assistant to the painter Jean Aujame.
Back in Morocco, he taught at the École des Beaux-Arts in Casablanca from 1967 to 1975 and was one of the figures of the Casablanca School, alongside Farid Belkahia, Mohamed Melehi and Mohamed Chebâa. In 1969 he took part in the open-air exhibition on Jemaa el-Fna square, a founding gesture of an art taken off the gallery walls.
A carnal abstraction
His painting moves between figure and abstraction. From Moroccan carpets, ceramics and jewellery he borrowed a vocabulary of signs that he stripped down to essentials: sharp flat areas, abrupt transitions, organic forms of assumed sensuality. The whole holds a rare balance, in which vivid colour never excludes serenity.
Dividing his life between Azemmour, Casablanca and France, he exhibited for more than half a century in Morocco, Europe and the Middle East. He died on 6 October 2025, aged 84.
