Painter
Mohamed Melehi
Born in 1936 in Asilah, Mohamed Melehi studied at the Fine Arts school in Tetouan, then in Seville, Madrid, Rome and finally New York in the early 1960s, where he discovered geometric abstraction and American hard-edge painting.
The artist
Back in Morocco he taught at the École des Beaux-Arts in Casablanca from 1964 to 1969, alongside Farid Belkahia and Mohamed Chebâa. His signature became the wave: undulations in bold colours, repeated and offset, evoking the sea, flame and rhythm all at once. He also worked in graphic design, publishing and murals.
A major figure of Moroccan cultural life, he co-founded the Asilah Cultural Moussem in 1978. He died in 2020, leaving a body of work that deeply shaped abstraction in Morocco.
