Painter
Mohamed Ben Ali R'bati
Born in Rabat in 1861, Mohamed Ben Ali R'bati settled in Tangier at a young age. In the early 1900s he entered the service of the Irish painter John Lavery, who noticed his talent and encouraged him to paint.
The artist
He held his first exhibition in London in 1916, making him one of the very first Moroccan painters to exhibit in Europe. His watercolours and gouaches tell the story of Moroccan life in his time: souks, ceremonies, musicians, processions and street scenes, in a detailed, narrative style.
He died in Tangier in 1939 and is regarded as a pioneer of easel painting in Morocco.
