Painter, theorist and teacher, Mohamed Chebâa wanted art to leave the canvas and inhabit the city: his geometry is a way of thinking about shared space.
The artist
Career
Born in Tangier in 1935, Mohamed Chebâa graduated from the École des Beaux-Arts in Tetouan in 1955, then studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Rome from 1962 to 1964. Hired in 1966 by the École des Beaux-Arts in Casablanca, he also taught at the National School of Architecture in Rabat. With Farid Belkahia and Mohamed Melehi he was one of the driving forces of the Casablanca School, which brought popular arts and Morocco’s visual heritage into the teaching.
In 1969 he took part in the open-air exhibitions on Jemaa el-Fna square in Marrakech and Place du 11-Novembre in Casablanca. He published many texts in the review Souffles and, from 1994 to 1998, directed the National Institute of Fine Arts in Tetouan. He died in Casablanca in 2013.
Visual consciousness
His geometric, rigorous painting questions Morocco’s visual identity and the integration of art into architecture and public space. In the 1980s he claimed a more airy painting, freed from ideology, without giving up anything of his demand for construction.
